When I moved to Egypt there were displays of toxic looking molded sugar figures on sale for Moulid el Nabi (the Prophet's Birthday). This kids were fascinated with the thought of such unhealthiness...and any that got given to them got trashed as quickly as possible. So this year I was interested to notice that the molded sugar has been replaced by plastic Chinese dolls with net dresses. Not really sure that it's an improvement.
I wonder which the children prefer.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be at all surprised if the kids...and the dentists....liked the toxic sugar dolls. But they get enough candy of slightly healthier varieties at Moulid el Nabi (peanut, almond and hazelnuts in hard toffee, turkish delight, coconut bars...the mind boggles) that it really doesn't matter. Still those horrible dolls did look evil.
ReplyDeletea conspiracy of sugar.
ReplyDeleteI saw some of those pink sugar dolls recently, they really are a lurid pink, toxic is such a good word for them. They were somewhere in Hurghada, within the last week or so. Brought back a lot of memories. I'd wondered what replaced them, now I know. Thanks
