Mining For Worms

The hoopoes love my lawn right after we've watered it because the worms and grubs come up to the surface where they are easily caught. The birds are striking with their black and white bands on the wings and the crest.

I saw this bird last year in Southern China. I've never seen it before and I spent a good half hour chasing it in order to take a better picture of it. I came home and checked on the Internet to find out it is called hoopoe. It is the national bird of Israel.

I couldn't remember where I'd seen this bird before, and then it just hit me. Pisanello, a marvelous Italian artist of the first half of the 15th century did a drawing of this bird. Here's an internet link, in case you're interested: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pisanello_019.jpg
Thanks for the beautiful site, Star
