Lines

When they built this house they left the rebar sticking out of the wall for some reason. I have no idea why since they bothered to stucco the outside of the building as well. But the shadows of the bars echo the electric lines passing by.

The reason they left the bars sticking out like this is, it enables them in the future to build one extra level, in which case they will need to connect the bars of the new level with those of the level below it to make it more stable, or at least this is what my father told me when i asked him why do we leave the bars sticking out on our roof :D

I like the matching lines, great shot. I'm pretty sure the rebar is there for when it's time to tear the building down... that's what the workers stand on, barefoot, when swinging their mallets. (I'm only half kidding - that's what we saw when we watched the building behind us being demolished by hand. http://whaleears.blogspot.com/2008/11/one-brick-at-time.html)

Maybe a convenient place for birds to roost.

I also heard (take it with not one, but a handful of grains of salt) that it could be because, unfinished, the house taxes to pay are less. Could that be true?

Since property taxes are minimal or nonexistent in Egypt (though they are changing that finally), that commonly repeated reason is probably wrong. However, many houses are built as single family dwellings that will be expanded to proved apartments for the sons of the family to use when they marry and bring home a bride. Generally, the expansion is vertical and the rebar is left on the roof.

like everything else in Egypt:
there is no such thing as building code: none-existent!!

Come to think of it, there is no code in anything whatsoever.

Anything goes as long as you paid the right person.
