Shade takes on new meaning in an Egyptian summer. Standing in the shade can reduce the heat by at least five degrees and if you can catch a bit of a breeze, even more. Gazing out of the darkness of a Khan el Khalili alley into the glare can make you appreciate the darkness of these medieval twists all the more.

Yes, I suppose the temperature would make one appreciate even the smallest amount of shade. I am intrigued by the huge ?pot/urn? being carried on the man's back. Must be a good 3 feet tall.
He's probably selling arasous...an anise drink...by the glass. I've never partaken of the drinks that these guys sell, mostly fruit or herbal drinks, as the ice and water they use might contain rather more life forms than even my system is used to, but I sure like the way they look.
Five degrees?! That's a lot.
We still can see a man carrying and selling "suss" in the Old City. Maybe someday I will try it. . . maybe not.
