There is a nice little market in Maadi near the American school, Kimo Market, where you can find all sorts of great treats as well as the more normal fruits, vegetables, milk, bread and meat. We were shopping when a couple of large portions of meat were being delivered. Of course the butcher had to verify the weight of the legs, but he did so with the aid of a brass weight and a simple bar scale.

Not really sure. Either a young cow or a water buffalo. Both are eaten here, both very tasty.
Looks a little different than our local grocery store's meat section!
Yet another great portrayal of everyday Egyptian life. This blog stirs ups memories of past trips. You're doing a great job at showing the world the other side of Egypt. I commend you on that.
Yes, I remember similar weighing scales that work on a system of counter balance at one end. It was fun using them - you're certainly more involved in the weighing process than simply throwing the carcass on an electronic platform.
Considering how trade is found in every civilization, there must be countless types of weighing and measuring scales / systems in existence. It'll be fun to see other types.
Nice pic!
