Just Above The Road

Visitors to Khan el Khalili are usually so overwhelmed by the millions of tiny shops filled with everything from toys to jewelry that they don't look up from the walkways and roadsides. But the buildings in the area are wonderful old creations with marvelous features. These old wooden balconies over look the square in front of the mosque of Hussein. The odd little roofed room on the roof may well be an air vet letting the hot air of a Cairo summer escape from the rooms before.

It's amazing what you can see if you just take the time to look *all* around you. :) After all the Friendly Giant told us to always, "Look up! Look waaaay up!" :)

I adore this part of town for exactly this reason! Every time I've been to Egypt I've stayed at the El-Hussien, which is not a particularly great hotel, but a room with a balcony overlooking Midan Hussein makes up for the plumbing. It's a great base for endless exploration of Islamic Cairo. I want to go back - right now!
