The Geometry of Irrigation

When I was a kid we had a big garden in Southern California and one of my chores was watering the vegetable patches. I liked nothing more than designing irrigation ditches and directing the water throughout the growing plants. I still love watching the irrigation in the countryside of Egypt.

I remember a field being prepared to plant rice for the first time. A man came from another state to lay out levees in what had seemed to me a perfectly flat field, in order to divide it into a series of level 'terraces'. Obviously he could envision the flow of water well enough to earn professional fees for doing this.

I love it! Do you know what crop is being irrigated here?

Probably corn for animal feed or zucchini but I don't know.
