Coming from North America, I was always used to sidewalks being something that the city provided. In Egyptian cities, the sidewalks are often something repaired or even provided for by property owners. In this case the owners of the building on this street decided to make a nice brickwork sidewalk. I have no idea whether the man standing and watching was a supervisor, a friend, or just watching.

I think if people had to make their own sidewalks here, there would be no sidewalks!
It appears this gentleman's sidewalk is higher than adjacent sidewalks...which could make it dangerous?
Is there such a thing as homeowners insurance?

Interesting. We take a lot for granted. It sounds like his sidewalk will be much lovelier than the ones here.
A lot of people here wear sandals most of the time if the weather isn't too cold...and we haven't really had a winter this year, unlike most of Europe and lots of North America.
No insurance. It's assumed here that you will look where you are going. After all a small difference in height is a minor inconvenience. It does mean that Cairo is not a babystroller-friendly city...but it never was.
Hi Maryanne - Well, here in the states if you don't watch where you're going, trip and fall and hurt yourself, you sue someone else for putting something in your way! :-)
