Face To Face: Women's Options

Egypt is a country of contradictions and nowhere is this more clear than Cairo. While visiting a shopping mall recently I shot these two shop windows with my phone. They basically face each other across the walk and express very clearly two aspects of life here.

True, covered women do have different and also contradicitve styles, which is very interesting and very surprising :)

It is good to have choices!

Cairo is definitely the land of contradiction! In the picture though, I don't think anyone is suggesting to use this as more than PJ's and underwear.

You may be right about the bra top, but I've seen plenty of girls in pants similar to the hip huggers. A young friend of mine told me that there is a term for the girls with the scarf-covered heads but spray-painted on pants and skimpy tops...Mohagababes. I love the contradictions, myself.

Love all the pics you've posted. When I was in college, I specialized in (one paper) Egypt. Since then, the romance has only gotten better.

Whenever I visit Cairo, I love to take in all the new fashion and contradictions...and am glad to have learned a new term...Mohagababes - that's too funny!

Do men work in the shops? In Istanbul, in the bra shops, there were only men working. Often 3, 4, 5 men hanging out.
If you were a woman, would YOU want to go in one of those shops and buy a bra?

A male Egyptian wouldn't be caught dead selling bras. Removing, yes. Selling, no.

Mohagababes rofl. That's hilarious.

Maryanne, there are a lot of men selling bras, but NOT in private stores like malls. But if you go to something like sednawy or El tawhid wel nour, or the old Omar effendi; all the sales people for underwear are men!! It's terrible really.
