Importing the Best?

When we first moved to Egypt in 1988, the only fast food other than the terrific local stuff like tameya (felafel) and foul sandwiches, kofta, kebab, or koshari was Kentucky Fried Chicken or Wimpy hamburgers. Wimpy has quite deservedly gone belly up...their hamburgers always were terrible and couldn't compete with McDonalds or Hardees or the like. KFC is still here, still greasy, and seems to be in good corporate health. Now where was that felafel stand again?

I like your photo but also enjoyed your narrative and read about Wimpy going belly up. Wimpy was, of course, the companion to "Popeye" and "Olive" the newspaper comic characters famous for many years but in their hayday during World War II. Wimpy had a large belly with a button always popping off and a chicken with mouth open prepared to catch the button.

Oooh. I don't know which is more telling...that you know about the original Wimpy or that I know exactly what you are talking about...

Wow! Thanks to Abe for the background. I remember Popeye and Olive Oil but not Wimpy. KFC must be everywhere.

The Middle East is where fast food restaurants go to die, I think. Arby's, A and W, Orange Julius...

KFC and Pizza Hut now overwelm the region, including Egypt. Not to mention: Fridays, Applebees, Chilis, and the like.

Dubai still have Popeyes, I think. Whimpys went away long ago.
